The Role of Random Items in Roguelikes

In brogue the role of random items is to take a situation that you're in. In Toe Jam and Rowan you might do something that's great for you and them. It makes for a whole different kind of play experience, not just about how you know getting closer or farther away to your goals it's about getting relating to your friend in some other way so it's a little different totally.
