80,000 Hours Podcast

CHAPTER

What Does That Tell You?

In his new book, Pinger looks at three different dimensions of war. One is the percentage of the global population dying in wars per year. He argues that that has trended down on average towards the present day over some period. If you forget about the year to year count, if you look at the lethality of wars measured as deaths divided by world population, he says it hasn't declined. That should scare you because world population has grown a lot, right? And if the lethability of wars tracks with that, that's pretty bad.
