Aquinas 101 - Course 2: Introduction to Thomistic Philosophy

CHAPTER

Kenny's Critique of Individual Existence

Kenny evidently supposes that a real distinction entails separability. Unlike specific existence, individual existence can intelligently be predicated of a thing. It makes sense to say of the great pyramid that it still exists or a phyto that he still exists. But in that case, essence and existence will be identical not only in God, but also in phyto and in everything else. In having individual existence, they too all go on being what they are. That's really what it means to say that phyto continues to exist. He just goes on being what he is, namely a dog.
