I think the problem, the breakdown often with coaching is that the student gives up too much to the teacher in many ways and doesn't take ownership of where their attention needs to be. It's about having what we call moments of deep insight or light bulb moments. And that starts with being curious. The best place to do that is probably the practice range because you might hit one or two really good shots around. But on the range, you can get into a certain rhythm. You can figure things out, which is what I think what Hogan meant about the secret and the dirt.
