Heirloom cast iron is a hunk of elemental substance that has been in the hands of countless other people stretching back often well over a century. Unlike other heirloom pieces of kitchenware, they're not delicate. I mean, it's like a civil war or a piece of cooking equipment that I keep in my kitchen drawer and I throw into the oven every couple of weeks.
