The earth is charged with three electrons that are primarily coming from the sun. The most common charge that we as humans see discharge is lightning. A lot of times you walk across the floor, you go touch the door knob or touch something that has metal or ground and you'll get zapped. In order to see that electrical zap that we've claimed on the end of your finger, that's around three to 5,000 volts.
