The Internet Sabbath: How to Avoid Distraction
William Powers popularized the Internet Sabbath in his 2010 reflection on technology and human happiness, Hamlet's Blackberry. The idea is that using a distracting service does not by itself reduce your brain's ability to focus. It's instead the constant switching from boredom or cognitive challenge that teaches your mind to never tolerate an absence of novelty. Schedule in advance when you'll use the Internet and then avoid it all together outside these times.
