In the book, i argue that consciousness probably doesn't emerge with life. That being said, though, consciousness is something new that comes into the world that wasn't there before. And ah, it is truly emergent. I think both the emergence of life and consciousness are examples of strongEmergence. But yet, we see something that's ontologically new. So with living systems, a system start to move differently than inanimate systems.
