There's been a move toward thinking of consciousness as something simple, as just phenomenal conscious. But once we're in the realm of capacities and we don't know what the capacities are, then at least seems to be, well, it's a view worth entertaining that complex capacities may matter. I think over time, the science and the philosophies evolve in that direction. For any complex capacity that someone might say is relevant to consciousness, people come back and say, no, not much evidence for that.
