Himalayan tartary buckwheat has been cultivated in the Himalayan mountains for 4000 years. It was a colonial food brought over by our colonial ancestors because of its hardiness. About 200 years ago, it stopped being grown to any extent in the United States. The only person that we could find growing it in the U.S. was a former Cornell University ag professor and his wife.
