The Importance of Simple Heuristics to Predict the Future

We need models to predict the future that are sufficiently simple. That means have few parameters in order to be robust. For instance, a very simple heuristic that uses one data point can outperform Google flu trends. But then the swine flu came out of the season and it flopped. A reason to heuristic is what people use in situations where the past cannot be trusted.
