Is Myelin the Limiting Factor for Synapses?

In some axons, but not all, the axon is wrapped in a sheath called myelin. Myelin is layers upon layers of cell membrane of the glial cells that sit on the axons. It's extremely rich in phospholipids and cholesterol. Cholesterol is the limiting factor for the production of myelin during development.
