I don't have what you invite theory of Mary Gates. But it's certainly true that I'm often confused in social situations. Those are very different from sitting by yourself and writing. As you know, many 19th century novels focus on social structures rather than individuals. Could you ever imagine writing such a novel? It would take a very long time to research them adequately. There are people who do it brilliantly, and I admire those people. But I don't feel like you must do it if you want to be a valid writer.
