Over time, the war lords just became plain old lords, and the farmers became surfs. Eventual, ally, kings emerged, who unified larger territories, imposing peace between competing lords. At the same time, i kings also leveraged popular support to keep the nobility in check. Because, like anyone, nobility don't like having someone rule over them.
