The Free State Didn't Have Enough Colonialism
This was not a colony, right? This was a freelance enterprise being run. What made the Congo so difficult for King Leopold was the fact that most of the center area was controlled by two notoriously brutal slave and rubber empires. The mythology of this evil Belgian colony is A-wrong because it wasn't a Belgian colony. It misinterprets the problem as being too much colonialism when the problem was too little.
