Autism and Vitamin D Levels

One in 68 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism. Vitamin D hormone has and activates the gene TPH2, which is in the brain and it produces serotonin. Serotonin is required to shape the wire and the structure of the developing brain. If a mom is deficient in vitamin D, there may not be enough vitamin D getting into the fetal brain that can convert tryptophan into serotonin. As a consequence, this could lead to abnormal brain development.
