ECG in Pulmonary Embolism
The triad of bloody diarrhea, belly pain, and distension should spark a consideration for toxic megacolon. The ECG can't detect pulmonary thrombus, like a d-dimer, or visualize the pulmonary arteries, like a CT scan. Neither Wells criteria nor the year's algorithm include ECG interpretation as part of the diagnostic pathway. But the ECG still has a role to play, especially in emergency medicine.
