The Role of Melatonin in Sleep

Melatonin is a hormone of darkness rather than a sleep hormone. It increases blood pressure, increases psychophysiological arousal and interestingly a range of different conditions are characterized by an abnormal rhythm in cortisol each day. Some mouse strains actually lack the ability to synthesize melatonin because they've lost functional genes that encode a couple of the enzymes involved in melatonin production.
