The Buddhist Concept of Right Speech

Buddhism's conception of right speech may not totally map on to what we understand about human speech now. For instance, gossip is a classic example of wrong speech in a Buddhist sense. But gossip also does serve a function and in many cases it serves a good social function. Gossipping about others serves a function and living in a context where you know you might be gossiped about helps manage your reputation.
