What Is Dyslexia?

I've not really talked about dyslexia much because it's such a controversial topic. It's most commonly defined as extreme difficulties or significant difficulties with word recognition and or spelling. So when I talk about struggling readers, why don't I say pupils who are diagnosed with dyslexia? Because those who are dyslexic are effectively one end of a normal distribution of these word recognition and spelling difficulties. There are an extreme end for this, so, you know, they're dyslexic. And that's what dyslexia is, we can talk about it as reading difficulties, but actually, it's quite specifically related to word recognition in the aspect of reading.
