What Scientists Can Do Outside of Government?
As a scientist in civil society, you can raise the alarm or bring to people's attention dangers that people weren't aware of. You can also do things like protest and petition your government to make policy changes if you think the current track is a dangerous one. How does that translate into kind of deliberate philanthropy? Oh, so I'll give you a few specific examples. In the 1980s, there were these exchanges that foundation set up. There were scientists to scientists. They had US and Soviet scientists meeting to discuss possibilities of arms control and risk reduction.
