The Spine Architecture Matters
The spine is a flexible rod. If I took a thin branch, a willow branch and bent it back and forth, it would take thousands of cycles of load. The stress in the tube is a function of its radial thickness. An NFL offensive tackle who has a very thick spine won't last very many plays before they're crushed.
