The Importance of Running Consistently

Longer than 3 hours is too long for some runners, according to Dan Lorang. He says it's more about minimal effective dose and consistent work. Long runs are important but don't need to be done every week or even once a week. To achieve VO2 max he suggests running three times 10 times 30 seconds at fast uphill pace.
