If i'm in a low cadence it's probably putting my weight down into the saddle and pushing too hard for what that mud is going to allow me to maintain traction in so keeping that higher cadence allows me to focus more on where my body weight is rather than being forced to put my body weight into the pedals nice. The other thing i would say when it comes to mud especially if you're talking about muddy roots and rocks those kind of things is when all else fails i'm really just concerned about the front what the front wheel is doing. As long as i'm putting my front wheel where i need it to be sometimes that's my main focus is just keeping my front wheel.
