The Effects of SAGE on American Society

By the early 1960s, it had become nearly impossible to separate American corporate ingenuity from national defense. The military was investing so heavily in certain industries like aeronautics and electronics that private companies were shaping their research programs to build weapons. In 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower gave his farewell address. He warned that Americans had lost sight of balance between actions of the moment and the national welfare of the future. Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. We have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions.
