A Brief History of Haiti

As the economy decentralized, models of family ownership began to take root. The system was built on extended families collectively controlling land where they grew a mix of export crops and internal market commodities. By now, sugar, the commodity that had once been synonymous with san domang, had all but disappeared. What sugar was grown was a very small scale and for local conversion into molasses or rum.
