The Circadian System and the Ability to Function

The circadian system provides this great organizing principle for our ability to function. It's able to know when morning or evening is going to occur and up and down regulate physiology accordingly. So in anticipation of sleep, the brain is starting to switch into sleep mode. Our immune function, interestingly, is being turned off a bit whilst we sleep. And it's our body clock that is allowing this beautiful fine adjustment to these incredibly varied demands of the day-night cycle. If you think about it as a day within, we sit on an earth that revolves once every 24 hours with differences in temperature and availability of food and not.
