The Early Stages of Literary Criticism
During the Middle Ages, nothing was really getting written. With now, poetry is not just for the highly educated, but everybody has access to it. You get guys like Samuel Johnson who decides to write his books on Shakespeare and some other poets. And then you have people speculating on taste, where does taste come from? How do we know what beauty is? Now they have to think about beauty and the world of mass market publications. Inevitably, that's going to become a high brow art.
