The Hot Cold Empathy Gap
There is always going to be nuance in our emotional response. We control our emotions either through down regulation or up regulation, where we work on reducing or enhancing the effects of whatever we're feeling. When we're in a hot state like being angry or afraid, it's hard for us to understand how our behavior is being driven by that state. The problem here is because we can't predict those states, we feel like we don't necessarily need to prepare for that potential hot state.
