Tuberculosis and the Industrial Revolution
Tuberculosis flourished doesn't really even begin to describe the uptake in cases during the industrial revolution. By 1850 between 75 and 90 percent of all people on earth had the tuberculosis bacterium in them. And 20 percent of those would go on to develop the disease. At one hospital in Paris in the early 1800s, tuberculosis was identified to be the cause of death in more than one third of all autopsies.
