trauma expert Bessel Van der Kolk puts it in his book The Body Keeps the Score. He says that when we experience something traumatic, the overwhelming experience becomes fragmented so that the emotions and physical sensations related to the trauma take on a life of their own. All the various aspects of the memory become fragmented. They are separated from one another in your brain.
