How Important Is Nutrient Detection to the Brain?
Yale University scientist Dana Small devised five novel drinks. She gave them, they were all made equally sweet with an artificial sweetener called sucralose. All tasted equally sweet like they had about 75 calories worth of sugar. Then she used a tasteless starch called maltodextrin to give each of these drinks a different calorie payload. One drink that generated a big response was the 75-calorie drink. It didn't seem to make sense and it happened again when she did the experiment again.
