For upper body work, like you essentially never need a barbell. And frankly, I actually preferred dumbbells over barbell for most upper body work. You can manipulate the angle of the dumbbells. When you're doing a dumbbell bench press, you can get them at a 45 degree angle and you can change it so it feels good in your shoulders.
