In 1982, an agreement was concluded called the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. China did eventually agree to uncloss, as we call it. The U.S. never succeeded in getting uncloss through Senate ratification. Each country's claim may or may not conform to the internationally recognized exclusive economic zone.
