There are multiple different stages of sleep that we ebb and flow in and out of throughout a full eight hour phase. The deepest stages of nonrem sleep is critical for essentially clearing out all the metabolic toxins that have been building up in your brain. We take information that we've recently learned and transfer it from short to long term memory during sleep, which is essentially like hitting the save button on new memories. People who are not getting sufficient sleep across ther life span are at a far higher risk probability of developing outtimes disease.
