Fitness is almost a itter how long as a piece of string, because we can never be we can always get fetter. Overtrained athlete loses the ability to adapt to stress. That's one of the hall marks of over training. I'm now training so hard, i've done so many 15 to 18 hour training weeks at high intensities,. that i can no longer tolerate what i used to be able to tolerate. It takes me two days to recover instead of the one previously. The sign of someone who is in this functional fitness definition, losing fitness because i've actually overshot optima so much.
