There was a Dutch tulip bubble where people were going insane for buying tulips. It's kind of like the first macroeconomic bubble that people cite and it theoretically crashed the Dutch economy. The Smithsonian magazine published a really interesting piece called There Was Never Really a Tulip Fever. And I've seen more and more of the story pop up in more places, especially in the technocrats fear area.
