When you restrict calories, we know that metabolic rate goes down. The thing about fasting is that physiologically, it's much better because as insulin goes down, other hormones are going to go up. So in fact, your body is not shutting down. It's actually pumping itself up. You find that studies of concentration of mental abilities and metabolic rate are higher.
