The tune dex was an index card catalogue designed for radio station employees to keep track of the songs they were playing on air. But this abbreviated musical notation also made the cards useful to another group of people, working jas musicians. The standard jaz repertoire was mostly well known songs from broadway or new york song writing factory tin pan alley. Musicians would riff and free style over these songs. That's always been a key part of jaz the art of improvisation.
