Jan Shahn was working in the prison law library when a friend asked for help with his case. Jan had never studied law and only had a high school education, but he wanted to be helpful. He would help other criminals convince the world that the past was not necessarily determinative. It could be peeled away, left behind like a set of clothes that left no lasting mark on the body.
