The Manhattan Project and the Threat of Nuclear War

The Cold War was the first conflict of the nuclear age. Military planners during the Second World War didn't necessarily think so by 1945 world war II had become a total war with Germany Japan and the United States targeting major population centers. A group of scientists from the University of Chicago led by noble laureate James Frank tried to talk the military out of using these new weapons on civilians Instead of dropping the bomb on Japan they argued the military should invite Japanese leaders to witness a demonstration. The moral and ethical approach is to show the Japanese what we have then give them the chance to surrender Jay Robert Oppenheimer takes a long drag from his cigarette and ask the question.
