The executive function is the ability to generate an emotion about a task in the absence of immediate consequence. It's being able to start studying for the midterm four days before the test, as opposed to the night before where there's motivation all over the place. There are other regions of the brain where dopamine affects functioning. This explains why folks with ADHD have less available dopamine in some of these reward centers of the brain.
