The elbow knee connection is a very specific form of limb coiling that is especially important when you're dealing with the guard both on the top and the bottom. You want to try to get your elbows and your knee as close together as possible. When someone is trying to pass your guard, really what they're doing is they're trying to cut you in half. They're taking away your legs. That alone is often enough to prevent them from completing a pass.
