Does Bicarb Cause Hypervolemia?
There is no increased response to vasopressors with bicarb administration, even in very, very ascetic people. Bicarb can cause hypervolemia, hyperosmolarity, hypernatremia. It lowers PaO2, probably through its thought worsening intra-pulmonary shun. People argue for giving bicarb because they have stiff hearts and therefore anything that will make the work of the heart easier is good. Again, not shown to be true.
