As a dog lover myself, who grew up with dogs, i can relate. It is like this whole idea of being a bad person, having a bad personality,. It's a thread for you in your story, isn't it? Im, i don't consider myself a bad person whatsoever. However, i was raised in kind of an abusive household and environment where i was told that i was a bad person if i didn't do certain things around the house. And i never got straight ays.
