The Three Settings of the Autonomic Nervous System
Our autonomic nervous system are the nerves that regulate our unconscious actions. Most essentially they respond to cues of safety, danger, and even life-threatening events from the world around us. There are three settings of our autonomic nervousSystems: ancient parasympathetic, more active vagus nervous system; and less active sympathetic systems. The oldest setting is responsible for how hot or cold we feel very often. It's also responsible for the freeze response in humans when we suddenly stop with shock and we dissociate,. This is the reptilian response to threat where we under attack play dead.
