Each research project really involves an element of risk that maybe sometimes we fail to appreciate. One thing that drives project selection for me a lot at this point is student collaborators and what they're excited about. I like doing work that I feel like can be tested in the field. But I would also say I have never had much taste for sort of writing the 700th paper on a topic.
