The Effects of Chronic Stress on the Prefrontal Cortex
During acute stress, we have a huge chemical response in our brains via a flood of so-called catecholamines. These are neurotransmitters called norepinephrine or nore adrenaline and dopamine. Amy's lab has shown that it's these chemicals that weaken connections between neurons in the prefrontal cortex. They do this by opening potassium ion channels, which then stops the cells from being able to talk to each other.
