The Toll-Puddle Martyrs

In 1816, a bunch of unemployed farm laborers in Cambridge met at a local pub. They had demands, including a two-shilling per day minimum wage and some price controls for food. What followed was a mess. The army was called in, peace was restored, dozens were prosecuted, five were hanged. To this day, the toll-puddle martyrs are remembered as some of the earliest martyrs of the labor movement.
