I think the higher animals are conscious. I see every reason to suppose art because consciousness depends on the cortex and they don't have brains like ours. So there's no reason to suppose that there are in them parts which give rise to pains. And indeed, it's always worth noting that when you stick a pain in me and I feel something, there are two things going on. There are two nervous paths from the place of the injury to my brain.
